Short answer: if a LEGO set is still in production, wait. Across the sets we track, 82% dropped below their recommended price at some point, and the typical best price was 32% below RRP.
We track live prices for LEGO sets across 40+ European retailers. Between 25 January and 13 August 2026 that produced 214,143 price observations covering 5,849 sets — enough to answer the questions people actually ask about LEGO pricing in Europe with numbers instead of folklore.
Do LEGO sets go below RRP? Almost always — while they're in production
We split the sets two ways, because they behave like completely different products.
| Still in production | Retired | |
|---|---|---|
| Sets analysed | 694 | 1,355 |
| Ever sold below RRP | 82.3% | 45.2% |
| Reached 20% off | 71.8% | 32.9% |
| Reached 30% off | 55.5% | 23.6% |
| Median best discount | 32.2% off | 0.0% |
| Median high-to-low swing | 51.2% | 37.0% |
While a set is in production, paying RRP is close to a mistake. Four in five drop below it, more than half reach 30% off, and the median set's best observed price was about a third under RRP.
Retirement flips the market. For half of retired sets the best price we ever saw was at or above RRP — the median discount is exactly 0.0%. Once LEGO stops making a set, discounting stops and scarcity pricing takes over.
That single contrast is the most useful thing in this dataset: the discount you're waiting for has a deadline.
How much does a single set's price move?
The median in-production set swung 51.2% between its highest and lowest observed price in the same period. That's not a January-sales effect — it's the ordinary spread between the dearest and the cheapest of the 40+ shops we compare, on any given week.
Which is the real argument for comparing rather than defaulting to one retailer: on a €100 set, the gap between the shop you'd have used and the cheapest one is routinely larger than any seasonal sale.
Is there a best month to buy?
Here is what we can honestly say. Our coverage only reaches full volume from April 2026, so this covers five months, not a full year:
| Month | Observations | Median discount vs RRP | Listings at 20%+ off |
|---|---|---|---|
| April 2026 | 11,922 | 13.3% | 26.2% |
| May 2026 | 19,327 | 11.4% | 34.0% |
| June 2026 | 15,033 | 12.5% | 37.6% |
| July 2026 | 12,329 | 16.0% | 43.5% |
| August 2026 | 2,437 | 13.6% | 43.6% |
July was the strongest month in our window — summer sales — with 43.5% of all listings at 20% or better. But five months is not a year, and we are not going to tell you November beats July until we have watched a November. We'll update this table as the data arrives.
What this means in practice
- Never pay RRP for a current set. 82% go lower. Set an alert and let it come to you.
- Treat "retiring soon" as a real deadline. After retirement the median set never sees a discount again. Our retiring soon list is the watchlist that matters.
- Compare, don't shop. The median set's price range across European retailers is over 50%. That's bigger than most sales.
- 30% off is a good target for an in-production set. 55.5% of them get there. Below 20% off, you're probably being impatient rather than smart.
Method
- Source: BrickPrice's own scraping of 40+ European retailers, 25 Jan – 13 Aug 2026.
- Sample: 214,143 price observations across 5,849 sets. The RRP comparison uses the 2,049 sets that have a European RRP on record and at least 5 price observations.
- RRP: LEGO's European recommended price.
- Sanity filter: listings below 30% of RRP are discarded as scraper artefacts (a retailer occasionally publishes a single-part SKU under a set's URL). This is the same guard our deal lists use.
- Status: "retired" follows LEGO's own availability flag.
- Medians, not means. Retired sets trading far above RRP would otherwise drag the average into nonsense — the mean "best discount" across the unsegmented sample is negative, which is true and completely useless.
