What drives these numbers

Retirement, not size. City of Stiix is a 1,070-piece Ninjago set that sold for well under €100 in 2015. It is now €1,425€1.33 per piece, roughly fifteen times what a normal set costs. Nothing about the model changed; it simply stopped being made and the supply dried up.

Licence matters more than piece count. Four of the top seven are Ultimate Collector Series Star Wars. The Imperial Shuttle commands €1,499 at 2,503 pieces, while the Colosseum — the biggest set on this list at 9,036 pieces — costs less. Fans pay for the badge.

The ¢/piece column is the honest one. At 14.7¢ per piece the Colosseum is the only set here priced anywhere near a normal retail rate. At the other end, City of Stiix at 133¢ is pure scarcity premium.

If you are buying rather than admiring

Sets go from "available" to "aftermarket" quickly, and the jump usually happens within a year of retirement. Two practical moves:

  • Check retiring soon for sets LEGO has flagged as ending, and buy at retail before the markup
  • Put a ❤ Watch on anything on your list — retired sets still fluctuate by hundreds of euros between shops and weeks
