Everyone tells you to watch LEGO's retirement dates. That is the wrong signal. The number that actually predicts what you will pay is how many shops still stock the set — and it moves months before the official end-of-life date.
We track live prices for LEGO across 40+ European retailers. Grouping 3,001 sets by how many shops still list them produces one of the cleanest gradients in our data.
The shop-count signal

Read that bottom row again. Once a set is down to one or two European stockists, the median asking price is more than double its original RRP, and 92% of those sets are above RRP.
There is no cliff at the retirement date. There is a slide, and it is visible in stock coverage long before LEGO confirms anything.
Why this works better than retirement dates
LEGO does not publish retirement dates. Third-party "retiring soon" estimates are educated guesses, frequently wrong by months in either direction, and — critically — a set can sell out at every good retailer while still officially "in production".
Shop count sidesteps all of that. It is not a prediction; it is a measurement of the thing you actually care about: how much competition is left to keep the price down. When 30 shops carry a set they undercut each other. When two carry it, they don't have to.
The practical rule:
- 20+ shops — no urgency. Competition is doing the work; the median set here is already a third off. Set an alert and wait for the dip.
- 10–19 shops — the good window. Still 85% below RRP, discounts shallower. If you want it, this is a sensible time.
- 5–9 shops — buy if the price is right. Roughly one in fifteen is already above RRP.
- 3–4 shops — decision point. Almost half are now above RRP. The discount era is over for this set.
- 1–2 shops — you are in aftermarket pricing. Buy because you want it, not because it's a deal.

The mistake this prevents
The standard advice — "buy before it retires" — quietly assumes the price is still good when the retirement warning appears. Often it isn't. By the time a set is being discussed as retiring, it may already be down to a handful of stockists at a premium.
Conversely, plenty of sets carry a retiring flag for months while thirty shops are still fighting over them at 40% off. Panicking into a purchase there costs you the discount.
Count the shops, not the days.
How to use this
- Open any set page on BrickPrice. The store list shows exactly how many European retailers currently stock it.
- If that number is healthy (10+), tap ❤ Watch, enter your email, and let the price come to you.
- If it is under five and the price is above RRP, the discount window has closed. Decide on the merits of the set, not the deal.
Every set page carries its own price history chart, so you can see whether today's price is genuinely low or just lower than last week.
Method
- Source: BrickPrice's live tracking of 40+ European retailers, snapshot taken 13 August 2026.
- Sample: 3,001 sets with a European RRP on record and at least one live eurozone listing in the last 30 days.
- Prices: cheapest live eurozone (EUR) listing per set, compared against LEGO's European RRP. Non-eurozone stores are excluded to avoid FX distortion.
- Shop count: distinct European retailers with a live listing for that set.
- Sanity filter: listings below 30% of RRP are discarded as scraper artefacts.
- "Retiring soon" follows the availability flag on the source catalogue; it is an estimate, not an official LEGO announcement — which is rather the point of this article.
